RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
