Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
