Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered many other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say early analysis indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure commented the incident made him stunned and had to be solved quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
