Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
